Long Awaited Late Blog -- Due 11AM Monday

OK guys, here it is. I believe that nothing is worth reading if we do not, at some point find a way to tie the text to our lives, our context, our values.

Since the very anchor of Inferno is values, I am going to ask you to play Dante one more time.

This posting is not about sin. It's about values.

Rank, from least to most important, the nine values you hold dear. For each value, type up about 3-5 sentences explaining
1) Why you feel this way and 2) How and why you believe that this is a core value in our society.

You should be able to articulate the value in one or two nouns. Example: Integrity, Fidelity etc. AND you should use only positive language. (Discuss values from the standpoint of what we SHOULD do, not what we should NOT do.

Due 11AM Monday morning.

Enjoy.

1 Religious- To summarize all other values, Dante's religion is important. What I mean is that all of the values in his value system are based off of what God would want, and therefore he would want the same.

2. Faithfulness, Circle 9, the last circle in Hell is the Traitors, all of whom betrayed someone or something in different ways, and therefore the faithfulness and loyalty are important.

3. Using the reverse of the cirlces, i think this value would be honesty. Fraud is a lie of some sort and can be found in many ways, but the key to understanding it is the dishonesty that is found within it. Honesty will get people farther in life in the positive aspects so therefore they should use them to better themselves.

4. Self-respect, though it may not be the opposite of violence, violence i believe is stemmed from a lack of self-respect. Not to sound cheesy but inner-peace and self respect go hand in hand.

5 Respecting others, whether or not a person chooses to believe another person, they must at least respect their right to an opinion, specifically those of the church. Dante feels strongly that people who do not believe in the teachings of the church should be punished for going against it.

6 Being Appreciative - The sullen were so tied down in life for pretty much being unappreciative of what they had, so i think Dante stresses how he feels and that everybody should be appreciative.

7. Not being bitter- I cant think of the word for this but i think it explains itself. Accepting things for the way they are and not attempting to take others down with you as a result of your unhappiness can go a long way.

8. Self Control- this is a HUGE part of Dante's value system. In many aspects these sins were not from what people were doing, but how much of it they were doing. Setting limits one's desires is good for oneself and should be followed accordingly

9. Keep a positive attitude. Don't be bitter, and take things for the way they should be in soceity. Things may not be as you wish in any given situation but putting a positive spin on anything could make things a little better.

1) Communication: In order to live in this society one needs to be able to verbalize what they want. All relations need communication and relationships can include a lover, friend, or work. Communication is a core value to have in order to function in our society to be able to be heard you need to know how to communicate.

2) Trust: Trust is essentially in order to live your life and not have to worry every second. One will become perinoid if they do not trust others in a friendship, work place, or a romantic relationship. If you have trust then you will be able to move forward instead of behind worrying about everything around you.

3) High Self Esteem: One needs to have a good feeling about themselves or an obsession could take place and take away years of your life trying to work on it. It is a waste of time to have self esteem issues. We are all different and should not care that we might not look like the person next to you and that you look like yourself, an individual.

4) Love: This is a value that should be experienced. Both in the sense of being loved and loving someone else. You should let yourself love someone at least at one point in you life. My opinion is that it can be the best thing and the worst thing to go through but it is wonderful to actually be in love and loved by someone else. The feeling is like no other and should be experienced by all.

5) Happiness: Life is not about being happy all the time because when it comes down to it there are some times when you are not but within your life you should have happy times. Those happy times should outway the bad ones because what is the point of living if you are not ever happy. One should surround themselves with happy things always so that every day is a happy one worth living and coming back to day after day.

6) Respect: As with love this value should also be one that you respect others and others respect you. To really feel respect by others is an amazing feeling and you should let yourself feel respect then you feel worth something. Just like you should respect someone else so that they can feel the same way.

7) Ambition: Life should be about goals whether small or big I feel like you should always be striving for something, get it, and then strive again. I feel that when you are old and looking back on your life it is good to look back and say wow I did all that everyone of my goals and be truly proud of yourself. When you actually achieve one of your goals the feeling is amazing and should definitly be experinced in life.

8) Truthful: If one is not truthful then you are left with guilt which is a horrible thing to feel and can last a very long time. You should be truthful to everyone. Even if you are going to tell something not that great it is better to tell them honestly then to lie and feel that pain. At least in the end you know you did a right thing by telling the truth.

9) Talent: Within your lifetime you should find some talent that you have and do it on the side for fun. You should not only fill your life with work and home or out with friends you should also do something you want to even if it is yoga that is something to do. You should do things for youself in life at some points and not just take care of others but also take care of yourself.

LACEY THOMPSON & LAYLA CHURCH
period six
First thing we have to say is that both of us are working on this together. (Double Trouble)

1. Health
2. Sense of humor
3. Love
4. Living in the moment
5. Honesty
6. Compatibility
7. Reflection (explained later)
8. Openness
9. Independence (Lacey)
9. Creativity (Layla)

HEALTH-

Lacey says..... without good health you wouldn't be able to enjoy most things that you love. When I was younger I would get sick a lot and miss like up to weeks of school, so I missed out on a lot of things (really cool cool stuff at the time). So when I wasn't sick I really appreciated that time. To get sick with something you can't control is different, but doing things that make your self sick is horrible.

Layla Says....... obviously health is the one main thing that keeps you alive. It is important to look after your health and your body so that you may prolong your life. When you're healthy umm (layla takes a long pause and looks confused) you can appreciate your experiences at a much higher level.

SENSE OF HUMOR-

Lacey says.........life just wouldn't be great. People love laughing, (try to find someone who doesn't). The truth is i don't know why humor is that great, but i do know that it is great. My best guess is that it takes your mind off of everything else.

Layla says...... so basically the people who have a good sense of humor have more friends. When you have more friends, it's easier to share with them.

LOVE-

Layla says...... ( thinking of Zack Rabinowitz) this is what i honestly think okay? So i saw movies and stuff, books and blah, blah, blah and i thought love was just a joke. So this sounds cheesy, but now i am in love and i am so much happier. Every single day when i wake up i actually look forward to going to school because i have 3 classes with someone I love. I don't get angry over petty things and i am so much nicer because i greatly appreciate everything.

Lacey says...... yes that was really cheesy, but layla is MUCH nicer. I think love is that one thing that holds everything together when you can't. It doesn't have to be romantic love, but it can be anything from puppy love to i-love-my-grandma love. I've seen my parents love get us through the toughest times.

LIVING IN THE MOMENT-

Lacey says.......because i live in the moment i can see how much i really am done with Dante. If you live in the moment it intensifies that feeling good or bad, but then you know what you are feeling and you don't second guess yourself.

Layla says........ so living in the moment means that your now dwelling on past or always fantasizing about the future. That doesn't mean you make the same mistake, but that you can start each day with a clean slate.

HONESTY-
Lacey says...if you lie you cant learn from the truth. For example when someone tells you the truth about whether you're good at something or not, you can improve and not sell yourself short.

Layla says.... umm honesty is probably the most important value to me. So it is easier to trust people when you're honest and have nothing to hide. People need to have a basic trust so that they can learn and better get along with one another.

COMPATIBILITY-

Lacey says.......it just makes life easier and since lots of things are hard it's always nice to have something thats easier. It is a core value cause nobody can do that much on their own. Team work make the dream work (rev. run).

Layla says........Compatibility lets you survive in the world. Any job you get and most things you'll have to have some type of people skill.

REFLECTION-

Lacey says.......so when you are young you'll do something and later say "that was mean/that was dumb." You will then try not to repeat that incident. This is a good core value because it helps you establish your own values and set you apart from others.

Layla says..... this is our typical layla/lacey conversation

lacey- its like history.. why do we learn it? so we can learn from it
layla- well duh obviously the people who are making the stupid mistakes fell asleep in history class hellllllloooooo!

OPENNESS-
Lacey says...... life is always changing ( changing is the constant) so you have to have the ability to keep up with and be able to decide whether you accept certain things cause you'll have to live with those things. The more you accept certain things the less you'll have to worry.

Layla says......... if you're not open how is anything gonna get in? So when you're open to things like criticism you can change for the better and learn from other people. Even though you might not want to hear peoples advice you may end up using it one time or another.

INDEPENDENCE-

Lacey says.....independence is part of what makes you confident. to know that you can do certain things all by yourself gives you that feeling of accomplishment. Like the long swim in jr. lifegaurds its all you physically and mentally and when you're done you feel special. it always good to feel special cause than you feel like you're worth something/you are important.

CREATIVITY-
Layla says....... i think it is important because putting your spin on the world is how you leave your mark. It always good cause brain exercise and you shed a new light on situations. It keeps life interesting (props to lacey)

I chose to do this in a "countdown" method, so it's least to most important

#10-Indianaship-This one doesn't REALLY count. I don't even know what it means, but it's one of my top ten.

#9-Fitness-If I do not have a healthy vessel for Earth to do God's work or complete my destiny in, then what's the point in the first place? While it doesn't mean going Vegan or exercising immense amounts of time, it does mean being aware of what is happening to one's own body. While values are mostly within mind and spirit, the physical value must not be forgotten.

#8-Optimism-Don't worry, be happy. Hope is one thing that we as humans must cling to. In a world full of death, illness, and evil, starving children, abused women, oppressed men, and a damaged environment (yeah, Mr. Bush. Even if there isn't Global Warming, you can't deny that oil and trash in the rivers isn't okay) we must have the goal of a better place in mind.

#7-Culture-Too often ignorant people cause useless strife because they do not appreciate other cultures. And too often people do not appreciate the effort of artisans who are trying to improve the world, and electing instead to be swayed by fakes who sell themselves more than their art, which is weak to begin with, and disrespect for any true artist.

#6-Loyalty-Even as an offshoot of Honesty, this is still one of my top 9. If one has ANY sort of social standing with ANYBODY, a person has people counting on them. Letting them down for selfish reasons is dishonest and sinful. A person must uphold trust in others, or no one will trust him or her. Since it is necessary to associate with other humans, loyalty is a necessary trait.

#5-Self-Cultivation-When wrong is done, humans point the finger. Apologizing is rare, and even though people may mutter the cursory "sorry," the same incident is bound to repeat itself. People should look into themselves for the problem. If someone does not like you, you should step into their shoes to see the TRUE problem. Even still, the "it's not you, it's me" thing is still pretty ridonkculous and is one exception.

#4-Mind Activity-Think. It's necessary to use God's gift of the brain to use reason to decide right from wrong. Dante decided certain elements of the Papacy were wrong. Rosa Parks decided Jim Crow laws were wrong. It is important to use reason and actively think to personally connect with God as directly as possible, not through leaders who could be corrupt.

#3-Tolerance-Wars would not happen, people would not suffer. This is one of the most obvious things to do. Look at people and realize that everyone who is trying to improve themselves should not be hurting each other to do so. As obvious as it seems, we still hurt each other. No pain should be necessary, ever, except the ones that you bear to rise to higher levels.

#2-Compassion-The whole reason why we as humans have managed to survive so long is because the gods saw it appropriate to give us as creatures second chances out of their compassion. If we didn't extend hands out to others, we wouldn't receive the gifts of others. No one should suffer in vain, as that is not the way god meant for us to live. Society would fall apart and it would be Hell on Earth if nobody cared for others.

#1-Honesty-The truth saves time, saves money, saves lives, saves souls. When we lie, we cover up the purity of ourselves. And to cover that up we have to lie again. We lose jobs because CEO's do insider trading, and we lose lives because Bush says there's a war to be fought in Iraq. Besides that, honesty is presenting everything in its purest, original form. Lying perverts that.

My Values...In a relatively correct order. Most to least.

1)Kindness- There are too many people who don't care; I just like being able to help people, whether its giving directions, picking up a pile of things they dropped, or sparing some change. (South Park pops in my mind every time I hear that word...)It just feels good when someone does something nice for you so why not make someone day a little bit better?

2)Respect- Though I tempted to treat someone rudely because I don't like them I always try to treat people with respect. When that doesn't work then maybe I shouldn't be dealing with them in the first place. In society I feel we don't always give people the attention they deserve or listen to people. I think that sometimes we have to remind ourselves that we are all humans and we should treat one another that way.

3)Committment/integrity- This is big one for me. I find it difficult to stick with something and commit to it but I've been learning to hang on and stay strong. Its really easy to say "I give up" but its really admirable and usually worth to dust yourself off and try again. It can be tied into anything you do, whether you're a kung fu instructer or a banker( don't ask me how I chose those two), its important to have something that you believe in that you can stay committed to.

4)Loyalty/honest- with friends and significant others. I can't see myself having a friendship or a relationship with someone and live with lying to their face or doing something to hurt them. I think those ties are extremely important and fragile and one should do as much as they can to keep them strong and close. Those people are the ones who are always there for you even when you run a red light and hit a car at 30 something miles an hour and your friend comes and sits on your pile of rubble that was once your car and says "Dude". Yeah, there are just points in life that you can't make it through alone and you need a dude to be there for you.

5)Trust- I always think this is important to have among friends. I would be a pretty annoying, timid, and lonely individual if I didn't trust in my friends and girlfriend. Trust is incredibly difficult because you're giving over control and its human nature to want as much control as possible, at least for most people. I think trust builds strong relationships but there is also the risk of being hurt. I usually know who to trust when I first meet them.

6)Health- I think it is important to respect your body and keep it running smoothly because you only have one and any damage you do is kind of permanent. I don't advocate excessive exercise because thats actually disrespecting your body because there is a difference in pushing yourself to a new point and pushing yourself into painful injuries. Also eating healthy, no one likes seeing the excessive muffin pudge around your waist despite how sexy you think you look in a tubetop. People have a lot of regrets when they get old and a lot of them are about the things they did throughout life. I want to be a happy healthy old man.

7)Maximum Effort- This should probably go way further up on the scale but thats ok. Giving it your all in other words. If you're going to do something, don't half-ass it, do your best(thats assuming its something you love doing). I'll be honest I don't give cleaning the backyard my all nor do I intend to but when it comes to music, I put in all of my effort because thats what I love.

8)Justice- Not like I want to be a superhero or something but last friday at lunch I saw this kid get embarassed and man-handled by an older boy. Everyone laughed and the boy felt pretty hurt, physically and emotionally I'm sure. I wanted to step in but I didn't, which I kind of regret. I don't believe people should be treated that way, it goes back to the respect value. But I don't think anyone should get away with something like that. Maybe I've watched too many hero action cartoons in my life but I feel like the world needs justice done at times.

9)Knowledge- I hope this can be considered a value because I value it and I hope others do to. I simply believe that you're better off by knowing more, even if it is depressing. I think that its best to have a good general knowledge about everything around you and have some understanding of how you fit into the world. With knowledge comes understanding and finding yourself, which I think I hold as very important. I think if you go your whole life without finding yourself, then you've failed as a human.

1. Patience
I feel like patience is something that is important just because everyday life does not speed up to you. Society should have this as a core value so people know that things come with time. Everybody wants everything NOW, but if we all took the time to get things, than so much crap would not be floating around in our society.
2. Morality
This is especially important, something we as a society do not have enough of. We need to think about our actions and beyond whether they benefit us. We need to think about whether things we do are justified and not just for our own gain.
3. Selflessness
Following in with the last one, we shouldn't do things just for our own personal gain. We should put others before ourselves in feelings and actions. If we are selfless we will find courtesy to be more commonplace.
4. Attitude
Nobody likes rude people, and it should really be a common thing to just have a friendly attitude. David actually said this also, but a good positive attitude can make things nicer all around. When people feel welcome and among friends, less people feel inclined to do things that are wrong to others.
5. Restraint
Another very important aspect that sort of hits on a similar line to patience. We need to be able to maintain ourselves and not go crazy. If restraint is exercised than violence and things of the sort would be cut down. Crimes of passion are all loss of restraint and therefore with restraint we'd all be better off. Just keeping yourself in line and blowing off steam in a safe way is good for everybody around you.
6. Respect
Respect is always important. Respect keeps your friends close to you and without it you'd pretty much drive them away. We need to have more respect in this society so that others dont feel like strangers around people they dont know. Respect can make many people feel like they matter rather than making them feel like they aren't important.
7. Loyalty
Loyalty is especially important to me because if my friends and those around me betray me it is possibly the worst feeling after i place most of my trust with them. Loyalty is important in society because with it, we can feel safer when we take risks and place trust in people. We wouldn't have more of the modern Enron type situations where there is extreme betrayal and many would not have to go through such a thing.
8. Honesty
Honest is always important, because many of us would rather know the truth than find out they were lied to later on. Like the last one, we place our trust in people, and honest keeps that trust. If you are honest in actions and words than people will appreciate you more and trust you more. Honest helps everybody to be able to open up and know that they wont be lied to when they are only trying to be honest.
9. Trust
Trust is very similar to the last two. Trust i feel is most important because when you place a certain amount of trust in someone it really means that you respect them, that you believe they are honest, and have all the previous values. With Trust, people don't have to fear falsities. Paranoia would be basically abolished when people trust others. Trust is necessary in order to make a society run.

Honesty- There is nothing worse than not being able to trust someone. Honestly is always the best policy towards every situation. Honest people would never do fraudulent deeds.

Intelligence- Intelligence is a vital value because without intelligence tehre can never be significant progress. Without intelligence and knowledge more people would be living under the poverty bar and would be forced to steal or find other illegal means to get money.

Integrity- Although it is similar to honesty, it still is an equally important value. Coming up with original thoughts and ideas is very imporetant. People who take credit for other peoples ideas are no better than thieves.

Friendship- I do not think anyone would be able to exist without friends, and the person trait to be able to continue a friendship is very important.

Generosity- I believe taht giving back to people who are less fortunate is not only a good deed but a wise idea too, because small amounts of money or other things can mean virtually nothing to you, and can make anothers day.

Self Respect- It is critical to treat not only others but also yourself with respect. Doing things that harm your body is not only dagerous, but a waste of time, money, and life. Treating yourself poorly is the same thing as treating others poorly.

Loyalty- This goes along with friendship, but is also diferent because once you stick with something, you must see it to the end. If you are not loyal to people, it will shake their trust in you and potencially lead to bad situations.

Tolerance- One must be able to look past racial or religious diferences while judging a persons charactor. Racism can lead to terrible outcomes and can ruin many relations. It is good to be able to accept people for who they are rather than what they look like.

Patriotism_ The feeling of belonging to something or someone is vital. To be part of a group and not an outcast is a very important feeling to have. You can feel completely different once you have the same views as other people and feel very loyal about whatever you cause is.

1. moral values- the standards of social principles and goals that are held or accepted by an individual. Dante's moral system prioritizes not human happiness or harmony on earth, but rather God's will in Heaven. For example, Dante considers violence to be less evil than fraud.

2. passion- the emotion of feeling very strongly about a subject. we see that with the Lustful for example, who are blown about by passion in life.

3. respect- a key element in everyone's lives. you must respect others in order to gain back respect. Dante is a strong believer in respecting other's beliefs just like his beliefs in the church.

4. religious- this one kind of relates to Dante's respect of his belief in the church, his religion is plays a very important role in his life, his values are based on God and that is what he believes in.

5.justice- there is a lot of justice that needs to be done, the sinners receive punishments in perfect proportion to their sins.

6. confidence- I believe confidence if one of the most important values one must gain. In the begining, we see Dante as a somewhat scared and entrusting individual, he even questions his worthiness and purpose several times.

7. being positive- it is always important to remain positive and with a good attitude, we need to learn to handle things as they are and make the best of anything sometimes.

8. faith- Dante has to trust in his God, he gains more faith by seeing his God as a more righteous one at the end of his journey.

9. sympathy- we see a lot of sympathy in the story of Dante's Inferno, especially when it comes to Dante's human sympathy and pity for the souls that he sees around him.

1. communication, articulation:
I feel that communication is important because it is the key to the development of people and relationships. Not only that, but communication is the best way to resolve conflict. I believe this is a core value to society because it is used to articulate feelings and emotions. I also think that communication provides success in business and personal life.

2. strength, courage:
I feel that strength is important because it helps build confidence. Being a strong person also helps to make a person successful. I believe this is a core value in society because it provides a self-worth and drive to motivate people to succeed.

3. respect, courtesy:
I feel that respect is important because it provides a foundation for human relationships. It also, like strength, provides a feeling of self-worth. I believe this is a core value in society because people respect you when you respect yourself. Similarly, respecting others and respecting yourself contributes to a person's success by provoking he or she to make something of his or her self.

4. hard work
I feel that hard work is imporant because it is the back bone to success. Without hard work, a feeling of success is hard to achieve. I believe that hard work is a core value in society because it is crucial to the further development of our society. Hard work is essential to any sort of continual growth and posterity.

5. discipline, self-control:
I feel that discipline is important because discipline drives hard work. I believe that it is a core value to our society because discipline and hard work alike generate success. Discipline not only provides success in a an industrial setting but in a physical or mental setting as well.

6. tolerance, understanding:
I feel that tolerance is important because it is the key for people to get along. Tolerance is also the key to understanding people and getting along with them in a peaceful way. I believe that it is a core value to society because being tolerant prevents people from acting violently toward one another.

7. loyalty, devotion:
I feel that loyalty is important because it provides a sense of trust and demotes selfishness. I believe that it is a core value to society becasuse it is the key to cooperation and friendship. Trust is the main component in any real relationship. A relationship cannot flourish and be successful without trust and therefor without loyalty.

8. honesty, fidelity:
I feel that honesty is important because it instills an understanding of self. Too many people feel that lying is okay as long as they get what they want which shouldnt be the case. We should embrace the truth rather than deny it. I believe that it is a core value in society because it is important in relationship devolpment as well as self development and being honest with yourself and others greatly contributes to your success as a person.

9. self-respect:
I feel that self-respect is important because it helps a person to develop into his or her own person. I believe it is a core value in society because it prevents everyone from being the same. Self-respect allows people to become who they are and love who they are. Having self respect should include living your own life without caring too much about what other people think of you and to make your own choices. I think that having self-respect goes hand-in-hand with having a successful and happy life.

So after reading back through my work, I found an underlying theme of success. It seem that in my list of values, they all point to some form of success in life. Whether it be success in business or relationships or simply success in yourself, each of my values leads to being successful in some way.

1. Loyalty
This trait is so important because it tests a person on every level. If a person can not be loyal, then they have no backbone, no strength, and no life.
2. Trust
I feel that to have trust in yourself and others is a very powerful thing. It creates a bond that is so strong that it can create family from strangers. A society without trust is one without a future.
3. Honesty
To be honest is to be real. I have seen that honesty truly is the best policy, and is necessary at all times in order to move on through life.
4. Compassion
Compassion brings feeling and emotions to me. I actually feel because of this trait and care about what is going on around me. Society feeds off of compassion and uses it to connect on personal and emotional levels.
5. Courtesy
I feel that courtesy is needed at all times. When people are trying to get by from day to day, a common courtesy is necessary in order to keep spirits high. People are interactive and communicative, and they need to keep friendly and happy to remain healthy.
6. Integrity
I feel that being true to yourself is very important. People can boss you around and tell you things that make you unhappy, but as long as you respect and honor your own values, things will turn out all right.
7. Knowledgeable
To be able to learn and have knowledge is extremely important. Without my education and will to learn, I would have no future. The only way to move forward in anything is to be smart and obtain the knowledge necessary to succeed.
8. Perceptivity
Perceptivity is a very important value because you have to be aware of your surroundings and what is going on in them. People will have different feelings and opinions, and you must be able to determine these feelings in order to have relationships of any kind.
9. Sensitivity
The last and most important value is sensitivity. To be sensitive is to be in touch spiritually and emotionally with others as well as yourself. You must learn/know how to be in touch with the deepest feelings that human beings can create, and know how to handle them. This value creates a stable surrounding for everyone, and gives society a way to understand eachother.

1) Morality- It is the key component to human society. The ability to be able to decide what we hold to be right as a society is key. The belief over whether something is moral or not has been a constant presence throughout the ages (ie slavery, torture, etc.)
2) Reason- This practice also must be used by human beings. Our ability to use common sense has led to remarkable discoveries and for humanity as a whole to advance. When we let go of our reason, we get rid of our ability to advance based on knowledge. When this happens we let go of the very thing that makes us human and become animals.
3) Desire- It is what drives us to better ourselves and everyone around us. Especially in the US, we are taught that if something we want to do is possible, we should try to do it to the best of our abilities. Desire allows us to do what might otherwise be deemed impossible.
4) Sacrifice- Being able to let go is a very important tool. Humans are destined to make mistakes, and have to let go of desire and temptation, or in some extreme cases die (ie drug addiction).
5) Compassion- Helping and caring for others is an important value. We, as a social being, rely on others for constant guidance. Helping others who cannot help themselves is definitely a great deed.
6) Integrity- This concept deals with honesty, but is wider than that. Rather integrity deals with gaining others trust through kind deeds while gaining respect in yourself. You see how a lack of integrity in the Bush office has basically led to all of America chastising him.
7) Freedom- Humans should have the right to go out and do whatever they want, pending that it will not hurt any one else. It is terrible that some, such as those in Darfur or in North Korea are subject to pain and torture despite the fact that many are innocent civilians.
8) Knowledge- However said ignorance is bliss is dead wrong. Any attempt for somebody to try to acquire more knowledge should be praised. Humans desire to know more can only help to understand everything more holistically.
9) Hope- In a general sense, hope is very powerful. Today, we see so much hatred in the world between factions, that the pain and anguish caused have so much sorrow for so many individuals. Despite this, most refuse to give up, and strive to make their environment a better place to live. Only through hope can we strive to make a better world for the future.

Alright, i'm off to bed.

I. Love
Love is the value i hold nearest and dearest because without love this world would be ruled by no positive emotion, life as we know it would cease to exist, because without love no one wants to give life to the future. Love is a core value in our society because without love our society would turn into a hate-ridden gang turf of sorts.
II. Loyalty
Loyalty leads us to fulfill moral obligations. It also fosters in us a sense of responsibility for if we are loyal to an entity we tend to be more conscientious of our actions as they may negatively impact that which we are loyal to. I believe that loyalty is a core value in our society because from the time of the Neanderthals, people swore loyalty to each other;this loyalty then formed powerful families which evolved into powerful clans which in turn evolved into the more powerful nation-states we know today.
III. Compassion
Compassion is one of the things that arguably distinguishes us human beings from beasts. Compassion leads to kindness which creates the good deeds that occur in the world. Compassion is also what makes positive changes in the world around us. I believe compassion is a core value in our society because without compassion we are a bunch of mistrustful hoarding people. Compassion is what leads to the formations of charities that help those who are less fortunate, what leads to promotion of international humanitarian efforts and what makes evil known as something to prevent.
IV. Respect
Respect is key as a value because without respect there is no discipline. Respect for all around you forms your discipline, shapes your values and makes you the person you are. Respect is a core value in our society because without respect we would be a group of disorganized mistrustful vengeful beings while with respect we give each other the right to reap the benefits of hard labor instead of robbing each other blind and respect keeps the very structure of society intact.
V. Devotion
I feel devotion to be important because devotion to something shapes your responsibility. Devoting or committing yourself to something shapes determination of character and the willpower necessary to push on in life. Devotion is a core value in our society because without it, we would be an every-man-for-himself society with no regard whatosoever for those who cant take care of themselves that well.
VI. Faith
I feel faith to be a fundamental value because without faith people have no motivation to go on if circumstances are adverse. be it religious faith or simply faith in what you are doing, it is the beacon of light in a stormy night, so to speak and faith causes things to happen that would have never happened had the person who made it happen not had faith. I absolutely believe faith to be a core value in our society because without faith we have no inertia to succeed and overcome obstacles. Faith leads people to believe, and this believing is often better than anything else in this world both as cure and as incentive to adapt and overcome.
VII. Understanding
Without understanding, we humans are brutes. To understand, to sympathize, to feel for your fellow human beings is part of shaping a structured safe society for societies were originally created as a means of protection so that its not every man for himself but everyone banding together to overcome large obstacles and as a result develop and evolve.
VIII. Wisdom
wisdom is key for avoiding life's traps. For through wisdom accumulated from years of experience, both from their lives and the lives of other people do we humans find the path of success. Wisdom is a core value in our society because without the wisdom garnered from accumulated experience, we would make the same mistakes again and again. furthermore wisdom makes us progress more as a civilization at whole.
IX. Courage
courage is important to me because without courage people do stupid wrong things. Courage guides people to stand up for what they believe in. Courage also gives people the strength to say no to vices that will have any adverse effect on them. Courage is core to our society's well-being for without courage there is no way to advance, multiply, adapt or overcome obstacles. You need that courage to take a chance, make a change and breakaway from the past into a better future.

1. Honesty- Honesty is a huge value to have. With honesty there can be no mix ups because there is no lying. Honesty is not only good but it does not start any problems.
2. Confidence- Confidence makes you stronger in life. It helps you think better about yourself. You are not afraid to do anything and are ready for whatever comes with it.
3. Respect for others- Respect for others makes a great person. Having respect for someone else makes you respected by them. If everyone was respected by each other there is no fighting going on in the world.
4. Self-respect- A big value to have. Without self- respect how can you get through life without hating it. No suicides would happen if everyone respected themselves.
5. Happy- Happy makes a good person. If you see someone happy and smiling, you almost have to feel kind of good. Being happy would make everyone a better person.
6. Loyalty- Being loyal to someone is huge. If you say you will stick with someone don’t go behind there back. You have to stick with the people you were loyal to all your life.
7. Thankful- Be thankful for where you are. People should be thankful that they have what they have. Thankful people can never see something wrong with anything they have.
8. Self-control- Without self-control, you get a little out of control. People need to know when to stop what they are doing and that helps to have self-control. Self-control can help people stop from doing any violence because they can feel that they are doing something wrong.
9. Maturity- Maturity is a big role in life. If you are over 18 you should act your age and not like a 7 year old. People act like little kids when they are 30 and others just think they are not serious about anything.

p.6

(In order…)
Honesty

-Above all things I value honesty. You cannot trust someone who isn't honest and there is nothing I value more then trust. Honesty is important in our society because without it we could not have trust in our relationships.

Respect

-Respect for both nature and people. It is essential for us to respect nature to preserve it and we must respect others by giving them the privacy and freedom that we would want for ourselves. This is both my belief and its effects in our society

Equality

-We must value equality of religion race and creed. It is essential in our society and should be in our lives to not discriminate based on religion, race or creed. It would not be right for anyone to be treated otherwise.

Determination

-This is one that is sometimes misinterpreted. This is definitely a core value and is certainly one in our society. I believe determination is not a value in the sense of making as much money and gaining as much power as they can. One should be determined to finish building their house or raising a good kid.

Honor

-I think that Honor is a very important core value. Honor is kind of a mashed value as it incorporates honesty, respect, trust-worthiness and some others. If looking back, you wouldn't feel good about yourself doing something then you shouldn't do it and to me that’s honor.

Openness

-It is important in life to be willing to speak your mind and share what you think and feel. While in some cases in society this would be looked down upon (CIA agent) it is important in our society a life.

Accountability

-It is absolutely necessary to hold yourself accountable for your mistakes. We all screw up but if you don't admit to yourself that you screwed up you can never change and grow. Again a value that is very important in our society

Strength

-Strength in will is a very important value of our nation. We are taught from a young age to be strong people and not giving to temptations like drugs and alcohol. This is a value showing in the incontinence cantos as those sinners did not have the strength to say no and their vices controlled them.

Tranquility

-If we cannot relax and rest our mind and body then we will eventually get burned out. Tranquility is the reason people go on vacation and in our fast paced stress ridden world is an important part of our lives thus our society. There is no real mention of tranquility in The Inferno but our lives are much faster and stressful today.

1. Love-Being able to give and receive love allows one to give, get and bestow happiness on another and feel good in the process.

2. Generosity-Sharing the wealth, the love, the good and the bad makes one unselfish. Even though sharing the bad isn't always fun for the other person, it shows that you are an all-around generous person

3. Respect-taking care of oneself and of others both personally and materialistically demonstrates that one cares about the feelings and personal effects of himself and others.

4. Honesty-Dante punished liars as well they should be. Truth is not always what we want to hear but to be able to always tell it and make the best of what truth might bring will make the truth teller and receiver better people.

5. Devotion-To be devoted to someone or something is to put everything else in front of it and to cherish it no matter what. Devotion takes a caring person with strong personal values.

6.Selflessness-giving of oneself to help others. Parents, a perfect example, would give you their last bite of food because they know the value of selflessness and would starve before letting their child go hungry.

7. Humility-Being humble is a value that gets noticed by all. Not always having to be in the limelight and get recognition is a value that others can appreciate.

8. Trust-Being able to trust and be trusted is an important value. You have to first be able to trust yourself before you can trust others. Others have to be able to trust you not to betray them.

9. Responsibility-One has to take responsibility for his actions and be willing to take the consequences of what those actions are. One also has to be responsible for example in showing up for a job.

1. Communication-This value is very important because it makes the other values work. You must be able to communicate to show others you care. This value is important to me because it is sometimes hard to communicate but when i am able to, it makes life so much easier for everyone.

2. Compassion-Compassion is an important value because it makes others happy while also making yourself happy. Just as The GTA Coca Cola commercial tells us, we must all love eachother to make the world a better place.

3. Temperence-This value is all about self control. You must master yourself before you can make others happy. You have to be able to act in the way that makes you happy, and be courteus and have good mannars to make others comfortable and happy to be around you.

4. Fortitude-Having the ability to face certain challenges is a main part in life and will get you close to what you strive for in life. Even when things get tough, a person with fortitude can easily get through them because they are able to persevere to face these challenges.

5. Prudence-This value is about being thoughtful befor making a decision. One who is prude may beleive an action is wrong so is hesitant to go forth on a thought because of certain concerns. This is an important value in our society because many people act out without thinking, and these certain prudent people have sound judgement and make very wise choices.

6. Fairness-I beleive this is an important value to be because everyone deserves an equal chance and no one should be singled out. In our society, this is a core value because in the constitution, everyone is equal no matter what and everyone should be treated that way. Everyone should be giving others equal job opportunites as well as not discriminating against their looks.

7. Patience-"Patience is a virtue." Im sure everyones mother has told them that line sometime in their lives. This is because its true, and one of the most important values in society. Patience can get you one step above the person without patience and gives you the edge in life. This value is important to me because it helps me calm down before i do something id regret.

8. Honesty-This value can make someone happy or hurt them. I feel this way because you cannot see someone or be with them if you cannot trust them, so honesty is an important value to me and im sure to many others. Once people start trusting you, they will begin to respect you and get you closer to your goal in life.

9. Respect-This is the most important value in my mind. Respect is a core value in society and helps you gain trust and every other value with a person. It is a core value in society, because without respect, you cannot trust and with out trust, you cannot love or honor someone.

1. Religion. I feel that believing in a god and practicing religion is important. I am not a hardcore Jew, but when I was younger I loved going to services. When someone has a religion to believe in, it helps in other decisions in life.

2. Being clean. I feel this is a very important value, because no one wants to be a "Pig-Pen". I feel that if my aura is clean then everything else is clean. I just feel better when I know I showered.

3. Sympathetic. There are times to be funny but there are also times to be there for people who are either grieving or just having one of those days.

4. Being appreciative. I know that my life could be worse, so I am very thankful for the life I live.

5. Honesty. Being loyal and honest are big things in any relationship. It's the glue that holds any relationship together. If you lose trust in a relationship, it takes a long time to build it back up. So, just be honest because why lie.

6. Education. Having an education will get me very far in life. Without an education, I could not be able to do much, like have a conversation with someone.

7. Self-respect. You have one body, take care of it, inside and out. No one knows you better than yourself. Never doubt yourself and never be pessimistic.

8. Respect for others. Be nice to others, and they will be nice to you. Listen to others, be there for them, and they will reciprocate.

9. Family. You are stuck with them, so be the best of the best when you are with them. No matter what may happen, they will always have your back. They are your best friends because they will never leave you.

*Family bonds – is very important in way (you all know what I mean) but to me it’s not really your biological family that it is important to be close with it is the people you choose to call family.
*Hygiene- this is important obviously to ones self, but more so to others, I mean you don’t want to make people gag a t the smell of you, more importantly you do not want to spread disease.
*Not taking things for granted (appreciating)- many wealthy children take things for granted & don’t value what they have, especially education, you have to earn it!
*Respect – Learn to respect those who deserve it (& only those who deserve it), and when you deserve it, you will get it back.
*Helpfulness – Everybody can use a little help in this world, if you go out of your way to help someone then you will be pleasantly surprised when someone does the same for you.
*Mental strength – It’s a harsh world and mental breakdowns are not allowed! Growing into a strong person mentally is a value you have to work on, but it will make you immune in future disappointment.
*Positivism – Is so important to me, if one is positive in everything one does than everything will be all right no matter what!
*Trust – Society is based on trust of others, American society has a great lack of trust, and it seems to me that that would really improve the way American society functions.
*Honesty - Is the most important, I am ALWAYS honest for better or worse, quite bluntly to, but since I adopted this policy everything in my life has improved, so it works!

Uno- Faith- Having faith in yourself is an important thing to have. Also trustworthiness is important with faith.

Dos- Positivity- When one has a positive attitude, they can accomplish so many things, physically and emotionally. I always try to be positive because this value can do a lot of good for you.

Tres- Confidence- Having confidence is so important in a person's everyday life. Having confidence helps you achieve many things.

Cuachro- Self Respect- Respecting yourself can make you a better person. If you don't respect yourself, then you will not reach your goals in life.

Cinco- Appreciation- Appreciation is such an important value. You must appreciate the people around you and the earth. Appreciating these things will make the world a better place.

Seis- Sympathy- Having compassion for the people you love or know can make many people feel better about themselves. I think it's so important to be sympathetic to people and they will hopefully do the same for you.

Siete- Respect- The value of respect is important because you must respect people even if they have different opinions, beliefs, etc.

Ocho- Honesty- I am a believer in Karma, so I think honesty is vital in your everyday life. Lying is a sin, and the truth is always better than a lie.

Nueve- Family- Family is the most important to me. Family will always be there for you and families should stick together through the thick and thin.

9. Cleanliness both inside and out is an important value to have. You should always have a clear conscience to get through the day. being a clean person should make you feel good inside and out.

8. I am not that religious. I do not attend temple and do not celebrate every jewish holiday. Even though I do not do these things on a regular basis I still believe in God.

7. Sympathy/compassion-We should try to feel compassionate to others that are less fortunate than us. By doing community service like working at a homeless shelter or helping at a home for the elderly shows that we care. This is important to me because not only should you respect yourself but you.

6. If you do not have faith in yourself or your friends and family you cannot get through life. You need to believe in yourself and others. Otherwise you would be a cynical and untrusting person, and no one wants that.

5. Respect- you need to be able to respect yourself and others. Respecting your body is one thing, but you need to respect your values and morals just as much. Respecting the people around you is just as important as respecting yourself.

4. Industriousness- you need to be able to work for what you want. Being handed something without working for it drives me crazy. It feels good to have earned something when you have worked for it.
3. Appreciative-Being appreciative is an important value. We must be thankful for everything we have in life. Though sometimes, when my life is not going the way I want it to, I think of the things that I do have, such as famiy and friends that I would not trade in for the world. I realize how lucky I am.
2. Friendship-Friendship is something very important to me. It basically sums up all of my values that I have list. The people I am friends with have most of these values in common with me.

1. Family- My family means everything to me and I don't think I could make it in this world without them. Family is always there for you no matter what and can never be replaced. They are the ones who teach you the values that you have in life, and love you unconditionally no matter what happens.

1.Forgiveness-If everyone follows every other virtue this one is not required, however that is not the case. People make mistakes and it is important that we have the capacity to forgive others.

2.Compassion-In order for a society to function the individuals need to have a certain understanding towards the others. Compassions grants insight from the life of one person to another. This basic understanding is necessary for society to function.

3.Faith-Outcomes are often out of poeples hands, and in order to keep everyone sane I think it is important that everyone believes in something.

4.Self Respect-People need to treat themselves properly. This means both physically and emotionally. If people are unable to respect themselves, how can they be expected to respect anything else?

5.Respect for Others-Bassically i think this virtue is "treat others as you would like to be treated." If everyone did that then everything is good.

6.Self Controll-It is important that people know when to stop. Anything to an excess can be a bad thing, so it is important that people know how to controll their appetites.

7.Integrity-Integrity is a very broad term, but one that we can all understand as being essential. People need certain moral guidelines in order to live in peace and happiness.

8.Honesty-Honesty is the virtue required for trust to be possible. Trust is required to get anything acomplished as a society.

9.Loyalty-An expansion of honesty, under the assumption that trust is already present. Once trust is established, the worst thing you can do is break that trust. Thats why loyalty is so important

1.Honesty-Honesty is very important because if you lie, then you can not be trusted and if you cannot be trusted, you cannot interact with people. I am a very honest person, and if I lie, then I will not be trusted by my parents and friends.
2.Respect-If you do not respect people, then no one is going to respect you back. In society, respect is very important in the job environment. I respect people, therefore they should respect me back. Respecting elders is also very important.
3.Moderation-In life, if you use moderation in any way, shape, or form, it helps you. Meaning if you were to use moderation in your eating habits or buying habits, you could be healthier and maybe more successful. I use moderation in my spending habits to a certain extent. If I need something I will buy it, however if I want it, it will have to be a justified purchase.
4.Integrity-Having morals and integrity is very important in my life because I have certain standards on how to treat people. In society if I were to see a dollar on the ground, I would not pick it up at first, I would make sure it was not anybody's first.
5.Forgiveness-If you have forgiveness, then you can be forgiven by other people and also God. The whole point of any religion is to repent which basically means to ask for forgiveness from God. If God forgives you, then you are good.
6.Faith-Faith is important in many aspects of society because it drives a lot of people to do certain actions. If you have faith in your religion or in God, then you believe what you are doing is right. I have faith in my religion which drives me to be a top notch human being because if I do something, then my future actions are controlled by God. It is kind of like karma but not.
7.Caring-I am a caring person to all people and animals alike. In society if you are caring, then people will be compassionate and caring back to you.
8.Charity-Giving to charity is very important for the poor, because everyone should be given a second chance especially financially. If you give to the poor, in my eyes, God will be very appreciative of you, and you will be perhaps granted access to Heaven.
9.Loyality-In society, Loyalty is important in the job environment because if you work for someone and sign a contract stating you will only work for them, then if you are not loyal and work for someone else, you can be fired. I, for example, am very loyal to my job and family.

1. Acting upon your beliefs: acting upon your beliefs is important because what is the point of having a belief that is not important enough to you to act upon and follow.

2. Keeping what you love close to you: keeping what you love close to you is important because if one was to treat what he loved the same as what he did not love, then what one loves is not as special as it should be.

3. Being positive: being positive is very important because it helps when one has something to do. This is a core value because without a positive attitude things that need to be acomplished become more difficult.

4. Having respect for oneself: having respect for oneself is important because it promotes positive behavior. Without respect for oneself one can do many bad things. That is why having respect for oneself is such a core value.

5. Being happy: being happy is very important because it shows that one is greatful. When one is not happy it is not showing greatfulnes. This is why being happy is such a core value.

6. Helping others: helping others is such a core value because if people were not willing to help others through donations and other ways then many people would go without help that they really need. That is why helping others is such a core value.

7. Respect for others: having respect for others is very important because people should be able to respect others even though they disagree with them. This is a core value because having respect for others is important.

8. Staying faithful: Staying faithful is important in many ways. If people were to betray eachother then there would be much chaos. This is why staying faithful is a core value.

Faithfulness: Betrayal is one of the worst things you can do. Someone puts their trust in you and you stab them in the back pretty much. Lack of this in the long run leads to corruption in every aspect of society.

Integrity: You need to have a set of principles to follow and live your life by. This also goes hand in hand with stability.

Respect: Respect defines you as a person. If you are not respectful towards others than people will look down upon you. Lack of respect in society leads to simple things, like littering. People don’t care about the environment so they think they have the right to pollute it.

Courtesy: This pretty much goes hand in hand with respect, but its more affiliated with people.

Honesty: The truth is important in making society run smoothly. Lack of honesty leaders to corruption in the long run, or something simple as someone losing their faith in you as a person.

Passion: Passion helps someone enjoy life. Lack of passion makes someone boring or uninteresting. Passion helps people go the extra mile in many aspects of life.

Organization: Someone who doesn’t know what going on frustrates others. If you are not organized then your not dependable. Lack of organization can cause cities to crumble because of the massive amounts of tasks that need to be completed.

Trust: Trust makes you feel like you’re not alone in the world. You have at least someone there along your side to help you get through everyday.

Stability: If someone is all over the place in every aspect of life to me that is not respectable. You need to pick a path and stick to it. We cant have people in the government for example not be stable. One minute they want peace, the next they want war. Its just not healthy for society.

9.SERENITY is a very important value that we sometimes overlook. Having peace with yourself allows you to have peace with others. Having peace with yourself also allows you to get closer with God, which is an ultimate goal for our society.

8. Another important value that ties in with serenity is SELF-RESPECT. This applies both physically and mentally/emotionally. Don't harm your body by getting piercings and tattoos, to not letting other take advantage of you mentally.

7. Another value I hold dear is STRENGTH. The ability to stay strong when others may begin to weaken. Without the strength that we as humans have, where would we be?

6. Something that I have been working on myself, and something I need to get better at is PATIENCE. I realize how important the ability to not stress yourself out over something that is so short-term. Take a step back and a deep breathe and just relax. Patience is very key.

5. The ability to FORGIVE yourself and others is an essential value that can help people just keep moving on in there lives and focus on more important things than stupid little fights. You can't solve anything or make any progress until you forgive and forget.

4. BRAVERY- The ability to stand up when you need to. You cannot just let something stop you from reaching the top, or achieving ultimate success. This is a core value in our society.

3. CHARITY is a key factor that keeps this world running. There is not enough charity to end poverty, but some is better than none. Something you talking about in class was Random Acts of Kindness and how they don't need to be random. Charity is something that needs to be in everyones life, everyday.

2. LOYALTY, in my eyes, is one of the most important values on this planet. Loyalty to your country, friends, girlfriends, brothers and sisters, dad and mom, whatever it is, just having the loyalty to stand by it.

1. And most important, The core value which allows all of these values to come together is HONESTY. Always be honest, no matter what the situation is. Honestly is by far the value that I hold closest to me.

1. honesty- to me everything depends on honest... everything dealing with fraud is dealing with a lack of honesty. Not only is dishonesty towards someone else but also to yourself. when a person is dishonest to others, they are in turn being dishonest to themselves

2. strength- strengh is everything! without strength nothing in this worold would happen. it takes the strength of different people to accomplish what is important. pushing yourself to achieve more is pushing yourself to results and happiness.

3.self-respect- self-respect is one of the most important things a person must have to survive. how can a person expect to respect other people when they cant even respect themselves. yes, i understand people make mistakes and are left angry at themselves, but everyone makes mistakes. thats the way we learn. and without forgiveness nothing good will come. loving yourself is most important.

4. respect for the things and people around you- one of the main things people under estimate is their lives and the way they are living. they sometimes dont understand how lucky they are to be living the life they are living. respecting different people is one of the key lessons for survival. every single person on this planet is human and diserves the same rights as anyone else. (golden rule)

5. Confidence- confidence is very important. With me myself being very shy, it is always important for me to be confident. and as condifent i dont mean cocky. confidence usually brings a lot of success. if a person isnt confident, it will be harder to go after what they want.

6. Passion- to me passion is very important. I myself have a passion for soccer. having a true passion really completes my life. I dont think i would be able to live without soccer. When a person has a passion, that passion usually takes them away from all the hard times they are having at the time. a passion is more like a release to me. without passions i dont think anyone would truely be at their happiest, because passions are what take you there.

7. Loyalty- I dont think any person would like to be treated with disloyalty (and thats going back to the golden rule). Many things relate to being loyal to a person. Without loyalty, i believe every person would be at war with eachother and themselves.

8. Trust- trust is one of the essential things in life and takes a lot to receieve. I myself trust people easily which is really bed because i usually get in trouble for it, but without trust many people would be fighting with themselves rather then being able to get help from others. I believe trust is something hard to get but also easy to break. It is also an essential part of life as a whole no matter how strong or weak a person maybe, without trust nothing would be able to get done right.

9. Knowledge- everything in life revolves around knowledge. Without knowledge no one would be able to be what they are today. The more knowledge a person has, the more they will be able to pursue and accomplish. knowledge is the key to success :D i dont think we would have all these cure for diseases or even doctors if knowlege wasnt present.

1. In my opinion the most important value is knowledge. I feel this way because without knowledge we do not even understand the difference between values and sins. Knowledge is what allows us to know what can do and why it is either good or bad.

2. The second is honesty. An honest person is one who you can trust. Being trustful and honest are almost the same but the value of honesty means not only that you do not lie, but that you try to be just and to be fair.

3. Loyalty defines a perons who is completely dependable. You can be sure that a person who is loyal to you will never stray to the other side. A loyal person should be valued almost as highly as an inteligent person and an honest person.

4. Next is being charitable. One who is charitable not only gives to the poor when asked to do so (like Godburn), but one who goes out of his way to help those in need. A charitable person is completely selfless and concerned about the welfare of others.

5. Faith is also a very important value. One who is faithful or hopeful looks at things with an optimistic point of view. It is very important to see the brighter side of things instead of only looking at negatives.

6.Integrity is another important value because one who cannot keep his own word can definetly not be trusted. Having integrity is very important and someone with integrity is someone who cares about his promises and is completely honest to himself.

7. Respect for others is important. Unlike integrity where you have respect for yourself here you cover respect for other people which is just as important as integrity is.

8. After being mentioned in class compassion is an obvious value. Compassion is caring about everything and treating everyone with love. It's very important for a society to have compassion towards one another.

9. The last value is hope. It is crucial, especially in times of crisis that a person has hope and an optimistic outlook for the future. Without any hope, there is no reason to try to do anything.

1. Love- Love is the most important thing is life. It is the feeling that should spark everyone to live. Love for others should be the best feeling in life.

2. Trust- You must be able to tell things to others. It is important that they take what you tell them and hold on to it without saying it to others. If you can trust someone with important things, it is so much easier to go on thorugh life.

3. Friendship- Having people you can spend time with on a daily basis is essential. People who can share common interests with you and relate to your life. Friends are essential and they keep me going through life. A friend can always be there for you in times of need.

4. Communication- It is necessary for people to express their views. If you cannot express how you feel, nobody can understand you. Showing feelings helps everyone.

5. Compassion- Communication and compassion can go together in some aspects. Compassion is the act of understanding someone's feelings. To understand someone's feelings they must able to communicate them to others.

6. Charity- Giving to others is a great human characteristic. People need to give back to those who are less fortunate than them. In the long run, the act of giving will come back and benefit that person.

7. Self Respect- Self respect is an extremely important issue. If you do not trust who you are, you can never accomplish things in life. You need to be comfortable with yourself. You are who you are and you can never change that.

8. Community- The awareness and well being of community is important. Those around you should be close to you. A strong sense of communtiy and well being helps calm the soul.

9. Humor- Life cannot be looked at too seriously. People would get caught up way too easily if everything was so serious. Sometimes people just need to kick back and have a good laugh.

1. Humor: Adam Jacobs brought this up in class, and I have to actually agree with him. Humor makes life worth living. Laughter is the greatest medicine, and humor always sheds a refreshing light on life.

2. Self-Respect: I don't think anyone can contribute anything good to society if they do not have a profound respect for themselves. This doesn't just refer to a physical respect, but understanding that you are no less than anybody else and no one else is any better than you (sounds like a self help seminar.)

3. Knowledge: A solid education is probably the best thing anyone can recieve. Knowledge allows people to create and invent what the world lacks. Knowledge also prevents ignorance, which leads to other more detrimental things to society.

4. Individuality: This stems from Self-Respect but a little more ellaborative. I think individuality is important because if you are afraid to be your own self, than you are essentially denying your ability to bring change to the world. Nothing will change if everyone follows the herd, and if there is no change, no progress can be made. Individuality is the greatest form of expression that we as humans have.

5. Charity: Giving without expecting anything in return is easily one of the most genuine acts of kindness that anyone can commit. Charity is important especially for those who are victims of incidents that they cannot control.

6. Respect (for others): We are all living together No one on this earth has any right to put anybody else down. If nobody had any respect for each other, the world would be a malicious and disgusting place to live in. Respect promotes peace and tolerance.

7. Optimism: Having a positive outlook on life is extremely important. Things are only as bad as you make them out to be, so if you always try to make the best of what you have infront of you, you will be able to overcome any obstacle.

8. Honesty: So many problems could be avoided if people were genuinley honest when it counted the most. Honesty is the foundation of truthfulness and purity. Often times being honest is difficult, but decieving and lieing has never benefited anybody in the end.

9. Integrity: I think this is the most important value to uphold in society. I think Mr. Godburn said it best when he described integrity as "doing what's right, even when nobody is looking." I've always thought of it as standing by what you believe and letting your actions do the talking. The thing I hate most in this world is seeing people act "fake," or never taking a firm stance on issues or problems. If everybody just acted with a little more integrity, I think this world would be a better place.

Least to most...
1. Humor - Nothing makes a day seem better then laughing. When hanging out with friends or family, we tend to find it a great quality to be able to laugh with them. Humor is a great thing, without it life would be boring.

2. Gradutity - Being thankful of the things we have and the help we get is important because it shows that we appreciate it. I think, it expresses that we are happy to have what we have and accept it. Without gradutity it would only lead to people not wanting to give, it's always nice to know that what your giving is appreciated.

3. Honesty - telling the truth. What else is there to say. If people were more honest we could go farther and not have to deal with crap.

4. Respect - treating other and ourselves with respect is a value we need because then we do not misuse people. Showing proper respect makes us amiable with one another and happier in the end. Without respect...it would be the end of relationships.

5. Perserverance - the ability to not give up when times are tough. I think alot of people quit right before they are about to make it. Alot more would be accomplished and many things wouldn't be unfinished.

6. Humility - Understanding flaws and mistakes of others just makes us better people. Knowing that accidents happen and are able to move from it just shows progression. I think without it alot of anger arises.

7. Loyalty - Relationships with others and keeping them strong, i think is really important. Trusting someone is something not easy, being loyal is willing to give themselves to them even through tough times. Without loyalty just like respect...there are no real relationships.

8. Love - unconditional love. loving just because. Without love, there isn't much left to live for. We need love in our society to keep going.

9. Coorporation - The most important value to me. I think with coorporation, many problems in the world today would be solved. No war or disputes, they would get resolved before they got to big. Working together, i believe can solve everything.

1.Fidelity: It is important for someone to be faithful to their partners. if everyone was faithful and happy with their partners, it would prevent a lot of grief.

2.Leadership: It is important to people to take control as a leader. If no one ever takes a stand, out society will never progress.

3.Loyalty: I beleive that if everyone stayed loyal to their friends/family/bosses/etc, the world would be a much better place. No one would have to worry about being stabbed in the back and people would be able to work better.

4.Trust: It is important to have trust in the people around us. If everyone could trust everyone else, everyone would be more carefree. You wouldnt hve to worry about being stabbed in the back. People would be less selfish.

5.Hope: Hope is one of the most important values. If no one ever hoped and dreamed for anything, out society would never progress. If people dont have hope, they would never be able to get through hard times.

6.Discipline: Discipline is also very important. People have to have the ability to hold themselves back or push themselves forward when the time si right. many people waste their lives away because they lack discipline.

7.Compassion: It is important to have compassion for those who are less fortunante than you are. if everyone was a littke more compassionate to everyone else, the world would be a much better place. If everyone was just a little more selfless, the overall happiness of the world might increase.

8. Respect: It is important to have respect for both yourself and for others. YOu have to respect yourself to progress. If you dont beleive that youre good enough, you will never have motivation to do anything. Also, if everyone respected each other, there wouold be a lot less hate int he world. it would be easier for differnt people to work together and we would have less wars.

9.Honesty: i think honesty is the most important value. if people were honest, there wouldnt be any fraud and people wouldnt lie to get ahead. overall the world would be a bette4r place.

Self-Control: Self control is the most important value to me because without control all other sins are committed. Self control is important to society because if everyone had complete self control no one would be wrathful, gluttonous or any other sins. Self control is important to me because it keeps everything on track.

Self-Respect: Self-Respect keeps people happy. If people are unhappy they do things that they would not normally had they respected them selves. Self-Respect not only keeps people from hurting themselves but also from hurting others.

Honestly: Honesty is important to me because I feel that with out honestly relationships between people can not be formed. I think lies fuel wars and war is a large problem today. If everyone were honest wars would be much less frequent.

Trust: Trust can not be achieved without honesty. I think it is very important because when people are comfortable and trust one another everything is peaceful.

Optimism: Optimism is important to me because when I feel like I can’t do something it usually doesn’t get done. When people have a negative view on life and all things they are negative in general. If people stated looking on the bright side of everything everyone would be happier.

Loyalty: Loyalty is important to me because when I form a bond with a person I expect them to be there for me no mater what happens. People who take sides according to what is best for them all the time are un-loyal and not respected in society.

Gratefulness: I think it is very important for people to stand back sometimes and look at all the things they have and be grateful for that. When I do that it makes me very content with my life. I think it is very important to be able to do that.

Modesty: It really bothers me when people boast excessively about their accomplishments. People should be able to share what they are happy about but not for the reason of shoving it in somebody else’s face. This makes people hatful and is not good for society.

Respect (to other people): it is important to me to respect and accept other people for who they are. If everyone in the world were more accepting and respected all other cultures many wars would not be started. A little bit of respect can make people feel really good and I believe everyone is entitled to respect from their fellow men.

1. LOYALTY. I think that if you are loyal to someone, they can have absolute trust in you. You cannot ever build a relationship with them if you don’t have that correct balance. This is a major value is society, but we must work a little harder on it in order to accomplish this goal.
2. OPENNESS. If someone is open, he/she is not holding back any secrets. Trust, honesty, and respect go with being open as well. Society is very good about being open with each other. They are not afraid to speak their mind because they don’t seem to care about the consequences... this could be both a good and a bad thing.
3. PATIENCE. There is a saying that states “patience is a virtue”. I believe that patience is a key value because if you are too eager about something, you can be disrespectful and rude to the one you are waiting for. It is not difficult just to wait a little for something worth while. Today, we are definitely not as patient as we should be. This is a key value that Americans today should work on.
4. HONESTY. Honesty is important because it goes along with trust. If one is dishonest, who will listen to them, believe them, or even like being around them? Society likes people who are honest, but there are definitely not enough of these people to go around. America likes people they can trust, and an honest person will have friends and be trusted by all.
5. RESPECT. I believe respect is a key value people need to be treated with the dignity they deserve. Younger people must treat their elders with respect, as well as people their own age (which is a major problem this day in age).
6. TRUST. When I trust someone, I have my full faith in them. I can depend on them when I need their guidance the most. This is definitely a core value in society because we trust the leaders of our country to do what is best for all of us.
7. DISCIPLINE. I feel that discipline is important because it is what keeps us on task and what gives us boundaries. When a child is disciplined, he knows what he did was wrong. In society, discipline is a strong issue with some people, but not with others. Discipline keeps people out of trouble, on task, and in the end makes them better people.
8. MODERATION. I believe moderation is important because there are people in the world who need more than we do. If we cannot moderate ourselves to only the amount we need, the people who are later or the people who do not have the money will not get any. In society this is a HUGE problem. We have so many homeless people walking around Los Angeles, one of the richest cities in the world. There is more than enough to go around, but if a rich man is going to flaunt his money around, others may not have what they really need.
9. CHARITY. Charity, Mr. Godburn once told us, is one thing you can do to make sure you are getting into Heaven. I feel that it is very important to help those out who are in need, especially in the Africa area, where they have absolutely to help. For society, charity is not as high on the list, but there are many people out there who go out of there way to do good for others.

1.happyness- everything pretty much boils down to happyness. Happyness is a very important value becuase if your not happy with your life, your life will be miserable. Most people are looking for happyness in there life and once it is found life can be very satifiying.

2.honesty- honesty is a huge value because without honesty there is no trust. When your honest more things will come to you because people will trust you.

3.confidence- Confidence is a major value. Confidence is important because you have to believe in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself you will get nowhere in life.

4.compassion- basically treat other how you want to be treated. Everybody wants to be treated fairly, nicely, and with respect. If you treat others well they will treat you the same. It has the same concept of karma, if you want respect you have to give respect

5.charity- It is always good to give to less fortunate people. Whether they use whatever what was given for the good or bad it is always good to know that you helped somebody in need of help.

6.self-respect- self-respect is a huge value. when you take care of yourslef mentally an physically your are bound to achieve more in life. By taking care of yourself you are morelikely to be a better person.

7.respecting others- respecting others is a crucial value in life. What everybody wants is somebody that repects them and when respect is given it usually turns out good.If more people learn to respect others the world will urn out to be a better place.

8.courage- courage is important because if youre always scared, you'll never experience life and therefore will not have the opportunity to learn as much. With courage you are showing bravery therefore you are willing to step up to any challenge.

9.forgivness- people have to always be willing to forgive. By forgiving people you are giving them a second chance at proving that they are worthy. Besides everybody deserves a second chance.

1. Integrity- I think integrity is an important part of society. Self-respect allows one to lead a somewhat good life and I believe that enhances society as a whole. You must be able to fully respect yourself before you can respect others.
2. Respect- After you respect yourself you must then reciprocate that same respect to others. Respect is the building block of a progressive society. Respect in order to work to its utmost ability must be mutual. It is with respect that enables tolerance and understanding. It is with respect that all issues can come to the table to be discussed.
3. Discipline- Discipline is an extremely important characteristic for both the individual, as well as the masses. Individuals need to show discipline on a daily basis and use restraint, go against their natural desire to consume. Society as a whole needs discipline in its consumption of resources, and this of course starts with the individual.
4. Love. People need love. When I say love I of course mean that in the broad sense of for your fellow man, and not "love". If you bring a general sense of love to the table, i don't see the world being so polarized.
5. Responsibility- Responsibility is what truly makes society function. Be it fiscal, social, or fmaifd responsibility is imperative. If people are responsible fiscally and don't put themselves at risk, the ease the burden of the paying taxes on their mistakes. Or when countries make mistakes if they could just take responsibility for their actions everyday would be a lot less complicated and depardf'dm.
6. Communication/Expression- Communication is very important. COmmunication enables expressioin of feelings and ideas. Without communication the civil rights act would have never been passed. Communication is the instrument of chancge.
7. Humor- A sense of humor is jsut a great thing to have in life. Society as a whole needs a sense of the humor. WHen you can make fun of yourself you empower yourself not to be daken down. Society must not be so sensitive.

1.Concern for Others
Perhaps the single most powerful way to succeed in life is to have more concern for our fellow human beings. Normally, we are overwhelmingly concerned about our own selves, driven by our own personal ambitions. However, the happiest people literally lose themselves in the feelings, thoughts, and aspirations of others.
2.Integrity, Honesty
Sometimes people don't say what they mean in order to hide something, protect themselves or someone else, or simply because they are trying to deceive in order to gain from circumstance.
3.Hard Work
It is universally agreed that hard work is one of the keys to success in life and work. Without it, few can succeed. A person may not be hard working for a number of reasons -- the influence of parents, a lack of energy, a lack of motivation, a bad experience, pure laziness.
4Continuous Improvement/Progress
One of the most interesting values in life is one's innate desire for continuous improvement. Both individuals and organizations, such as a business, can adopt this value. For example, continuous improvement for an individual might can come in the form of a continuous urge to increase one's knowledge and skills in an area, a desire to improve one's attitudes.
5. Respect for the Individual
One of the most significant personal values is to look on every person as a special, unique individual. This form of deep respect for each person has the power of generating good will, great happiness, and great achievement.

1. faithfullness. you should be faithful to yourself, what you say, and to someone you are with. you need to be faithful to yourself, so that you can accomplish thing sthat you set out to do. faithful to what you say so that you are taken seriously. and faithful to someone you are with, because you ahve signed an invisable contract saying that you would be... plus cheating on someone is lame.

2. honesty. if you lie, then you suck, and that is that. lying gets you no where, you just end up having to fight through life with lies. and in the end you always lose track of the lies, so then you just end up getting caught. plus you get more respect for telling the truth, and who doesn't like to be respected.

3. self-respect. you need to respect yourself because, if you can't respect yourself then there is no way in hell that you are going to respect others. plus, your body is precious. you shouldn't be out getting high (slowly becoming more stupid), then eating fast food and getting fat from the muchies, and then going to a party and passing out from a bottle of JD. in that one night you have screwed your brain up twice, had a huge intake of fat, and messed with your liver. basically your shortening your life. no self-respect in that. now of course this all sounds hypocritical because i play football and your kinda throwing your body out there and asking for serious injury...but...that's a sport, and sports get excluded from this whole thing because you are exercising.

4. respect-others. i believe in the "treat others as you would like to be treated" philosophy. i think that if you respect others, then you get respect in return from them. it's important to respect your piers when they deserve it, so that when it is your time, they return the favor.

5. hard work. i'm not even sure if this is a virtue...but it's important to me. i think that you have to work hard to accomplish anythign that you want in life. don't just "kick it" and hope for the best. otherwise your going to end up like the bums that g-burn was talking about in class today. if you want somethign, then do the work that is needed to get there.

1.Honesty- With honesty, a lot of problems are dealt with really quickly and it's always nice to know some one respects you enough to know that you can take the god honest truth.

2. Tolerance- When you are able to accept other people points of views or situations, even if you don't agree with them, you have taken the first step towards a peaceful resolution to almost any problem out there.

3.Charity- If the 'down-trodden' are taken care of or actually given the chance to make their own lives better the world in its entirety would be a better place because everyone says we need to take care of those less fortunate but if they don't even want to take care of themselves then it's just a wasted effort.

4.GOOD Work Ethic- If people are willing to work and not just wait for people to hand them their dreams on a platter(be it whatever color they prefer) then a lot of advances in all fields of life would occur.

5. Love/Respect- In a way, if everyone in the world held something dear to his/her-self, EVERYONE could relate to each other in some kind of way. And by respecting that others have something precious to themselves, no one would want to take that away from each other because they wouldn't want their precious thing taken away from his/her-self (sorry if that didn't make much sense).

6. Appreciation/Value- In the literal sense, if you value yourself, what you have, and what others have, then it makes it very easy to see why you would want to keep it in good condition or just be thankful for having it in the first place.

7. Faith/Hope- Doesn't necessarily need to be blind, or that in which you see God, but the one where you believe in something. A kind of hope for the better or maybe that most people are innately good. It's kind of a morbid world if you look at the stat.s behind all the horrible things that go on, but as long as you have faith that things will get better or at least have some kind of hope that it won't happen to you, and then it makes it an easier place to live.
(Jeez, I'm running out of over-all values that can't really be tossed into one of the above categories)

8. Family- I know, I know; most people (especially in the US where the divorce rate is insanely high) wouldn't exactly call this a value. But if you see two people in a burning building (sorry this is really morbid) and only had enough time to save one, AND one of them was your mother, you're going to save your mother without thinking twice about it. THAT is what I mean by family as a value. People you care about enough to put yourself in harms way to help.

9. Discipline- To know when to stop and to tell what's good and bad. THAT is extremely important, especially in today's times when people seem to have problems accepting blame and knowing when thing s are wrong or right. True enough nothing is ever really this simple, but when you add it to the other values already stated it makes it pretty clear what is needed and what should be avoided.

Benjamin "Fantabulous" Baker:

1) Compassion: Compassion encompasses all goodness and being nice to mankind. Dante had a beef with rejecting the light of God, but if we show COMPASSION toward God, well be ok. And everyone should be nice to each other.

2) Honesty: People shouldn't have to lie in our ideal compassionate world. It's always better to speak the truth, because lying just never ends up well. I saw a play last night, and a guy lied, and he lost his job. Sucks to lie.

3) Respect: All people deserve it, and this ties into the golden rule that we all know and love. If you respect others, they'll respect you and everyone will be happy together.

4) Serenity: We did this in class, and i totally digged the idea of it. How can we be at peace with others if we are not at peace with ourselves? Everyone has a happy place, and that happy place should be the world we live in.

5) Optimism: Life really sucks when you think it is out to get you. Always keeping a cheery outlook makes your day so much better, and you dont have to refill your glass as often because you have more water in it.

6) Trustworthyness(?): People need to be able to trust (ahh thats the word) in fellow man because we cannot continue a civilization all by ourself. We need other people's help, and we need to be able to put our trust in others. So WE need to be trustworthy first.

7) Passion: Passion came up in class too and seemed like a real humdinger. A passion for anything means a promising, dedicated approach, and if that passion is for say, learning, then who knows, that passion may be evolution in disguise.

8) Courage: We live in a free society, and "freedom is scary. It's a blast of cool wind that burns your face to wake ya up" (David's in Urinetown, May 24-26 btw). We need to be able to face change, and anything scary, because if we cant, then our society cannot progress and well all be girly men.

9) Finally, confidence: Confidence encompasses soo much, courage, honesty, compassion, everything i said. If you have confidence in yourself and what you believe in, why do you need to lie? If you have confidence in your peers, you can trust them. If you have confidence in your own abilities, you'll be courageous. Being confident just makes life better. Confidence is going out there and knowing its for the better, and thats good.

My 9 core values are, respect, honesty/trust, loyalty, compassion, knowledge/wisdom, forgiveness, bravery/courage, strength/confidence.
1. Respect: For me respect spreads to yourself and others, for yourself it means abstaining from things that re harmful to your mind or body and for others I believe that it is not pushing or supplying other with harmful things. Being able to keep yourself from doing things that re harmful would include: drugs, alcohol, unprotected sex, and other behaviors that could get you into trouble with your parents or the law. I would also go as far to say that doing things such as piercing or tattoos would be considered harmful because your body is your temple and you should treat it as such.
2. Honesty/Trust: I believe that if you are honest with someone it would go hand in hand with trusting someone or being trustworthy. Honesty is a big thing for me because I have been lied to many times, trust is the same way because I trust people until given reasons not to. Being honest, to me, is a core value of society because if everyone lies then you never know the truth and in the world we live in that could be very dangerous.
3. Loyalty: Being loyal is a value to me because so many people betray you and try to “play both sides of the fence” so it is hard to know you can trust (#2). Loyalty could be taken in many instances, such as, friendship and being loyal by keeping secrets, and in a relationship by not cheating on your partner. Loyalty shows what kind of person you are, if you give your word loyalty is what backs it up.
4. Compassion: Compassion is a pretty simple one, if you are a compassionate person you are active with charity and do work for others with nothing in return. It shows that you care for the greater good and not just for yourself. People who are compassionate draw friends to them which can tie back to honesty/trust and loyalty because they are all things that help to build strong friendships.
5. Knowledge/Wisdom: Knowledge and wisdom go hand in hand for me because to have wisdom you must have knowledge, and to what knowledge you must have wisdom. I always think of the saying “A word to the wise.” It always confused me because someone who is wise would not need advice when in fact it is the exact opposite, someone who is wise would seek advice to gain more knowledge. And knowledge is gained though learning from the wise. And wisdom is passed on by people that seek knowledge. Having both of those traits will help you to become a more well rounded person.
6. Forgiveness: Forgiveness is a very important one because everyone needs forgiveness once in their lives. Everyone does things that they aren’t proud of and either needs forgiveness from God or from a fellow man. And by giving someone forgiveness you are in return expecting to be forgiven if you ever do something that would hurt that person, either intentionally or unintentionally. Being a forgiving person shows growth and compassion (#4).
7. Bravery/Courage: Courage is the power to do what is right whether it is popular or not. Courage is going against the grain and standing up for what you believe in whether you will be liked or not for what you are saying. To be able to show courage you need to be brave, because being brave is that first reaction that tells you something’s wrong. It is what makes you want to stand up and say what you believe. Bravery is the first step to being courageous.
8. Strength/Confidence: I believe that if you are a strong person you are a confident person. I believe that confidence comes from strength. This isn’t muscular strength but the strength of will and heart that help you to stand up against you closest friends and say you disagree with what they are doing. Confidence is the voice inside your head that lets you walk into a room with your head held high and know that you are a good person no matter what anyone else says or thinks. You cannot have confidence without strength, or strength without confidence.
9. Moderation: “Everything in moderation.” We’ve been told that since we were young but it should be a core value, because without moderation we would all be crazed animals going after what we want with no regard for things that need to be done or what is best for us. If you were hungry without moderation you would never know when to stop and eat until you could not eat anymore. If you were thirst you would drink until you drowned yourself. Moderation is necessary to live a productive life.

Honesty - Something basic that all societies need to function in a healthy manner. I feel that most other comments will have this on their list too - it is such an important philosophy when it comes to important values that benefit society. Honesty wipes out many forms of selfishness and greed.

Altruism/Community - These two must be paired. Selflessness is basically an ideal value which would help society tremendously. Forget ambition, forget pride, and forget personal glory. With a strong sense of community, a person can do much more good than harm.

Empathy - I liked this value that we spoke about in class. Community sort of leads into it - without focusing on the self, you consider all others around you equal. You look at life with different perspectives, and try to accommodate for each.

Compassion - A final tie-in for the Community and Empathy. More than just seeing things through someone else's eyes, but doing something about it. If a majority of a society is compassionate, then life is improved for everyone. Compassion is indeed a value to be respected.

Good work ethic - Members of a society must be hard-working. Society directly benefits from how much each member contributes. This value is an important one, as it prevents people from getting free-rides from all that altruism and compassion... :)

Self-esteem - A spin-of being hardworking, having a positive self-esteem allows for confidence and improved contributions to society. As basic as it seems, a positive self-esteem is a key value necessary for all people. It almost counter-acts all that altruism and compassion so that you still have respect for yourself and your work.

Optimism - This isn't just foolish or wishful thinking. I consider it a value. With optimism, a person can cultivate a sense of hope and joy. This is ideal for any society, and can spread through a population.

Respect - Respect is a measure of deference and sometimes the ability to see fault in your own ways. Through reverence in another individual, you are biting back arrogance and self-glorification. Respect is especially important for a society as a whole.

Integrity - An offshoot of honesty, but more of a sense of wholeness. Through integrity, people can generate healthier relationships and reduce greed and malice. Integrity is basically the one big core value everyone should have - adherence to a moral code.
